Safe Place Activity

Benefit: Creates a safe place to help relieve anxiety, worry, and stress and promote deep relaxation. This is a free visualization and creative art practice to create a safe space.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 sheet of drawing paper

  • Assorted markers

  • Colored pencils

  • Paints

Description: Creating a safe place on paper can help alleviate anxiety, worry, and stress when faced with a trigger. Triggers are stimuli—such as noises, smells, or sights—that may evoke stress in the body due to their association with past negative experiences or trauma.

The purpose of the Safe Place painting is to offer a visual image you can use to bring feelings of security, peace, and calm to mind during challenging moments. using a metaphor, such as a sunrise, holiday scene, or even a place you love like your neighborhood.

Steps:

  1. Visualize: Think of a place where you feel most comfortable and secure. This could be somewhere outdoors, indoors, or in a fantasy world.

  2. Create: Using markers, colored pencils, paints draw your imagined safe place on the paper. Include details and colors that bring a sense of calm and ease.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Are there associations in your drawing that make you feel uncomfortable?

  • What places, smells, or people create positive thoughts and feelings of safety for you?

  • Identifying your triggers is key to preparing yourself for coping with them.

  • What additional tools—such as booking an angelic reiki session, journaling, or meditating—can help you manage challenging situations?
