3 top tips for winter readiness through autumn arts and meditation.

Updated: Oct 4

Are your children back at school? Do you have more time to boost your self-care routine?

Watercolour painting is of a beautiful tree outside my window - it helped me connect to the present moment.

These are great tips for enhancing self-care and preparing for winter through meditation, creativity, and detoxing! Here's a reflection on each:

1. Mind and Body Holistic Health:

Practicing meditation for just 10 to 20 minutes a day is an excellent way to reconnect with yourself, and calm the mind, and body. Deep breathing and becoming aware of your surroundings are one of the key ways to becoming present and attuned to your body. Meditation helps nourish your body and boosts the immune system, reducing stress levels.

Using a simple practice called gently alert attention wide open or GAWWO for short, brings peace and present-moment awareness.

Meditation for Immune Health

  • Visualize Healing: Guided visualization, where you imagine your immune cells strengthening and your body healing, can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and promote a calm state that enhances immune function.

  • Focus on Immune-Boosting Imagery: Meditate on images of strength and vitality, imagining your body as resilient and capable of fighting off illness.

How to Try It:

  • Sit quietly and imagine your immune cells working efficiently to protect you. Visualize white blood cells moving through your body, fighting infections, and keeping you healthy.

  • You can even draw or paint what you visualized during your meditation session, combining both practices.

2. Creative Expression - Autumn art:

Engaging in artistic activities can be therapeutic. By tapping into your body's senses, you're encouraging not only mindfulness but also creative exploration, which can be deeply healing. Whether it's drawing, painting, or another medium, expressing yourself freely can be a wonderful outlet for mind, body, and spirit. Here is a link to my new "Noticing the Now

How to Try It:

  • Dedicate 15-30 minutes a day to drawing, painting, or any medium you enjoy.

  • Don’t aim for perfection—just focus on expressing how you feel in the moment.

  • Explore nature-themed art as a way to connect to the rhythms of the seasons.

  • Drawing or coloring mandalas (circular designs) can be a meditative process that brings calm and focus. The repetitive nature of the patterns induces a state of mindfulness that is known to lower stress and boost immunity.

3. Mind and Body Detox:

Taking a break from technology and being mindful of what you consume can greatly support your mental and physical well-being. Gentle morning fasting and a nutrient-rich diet promote clarity while disconnecting from screens helps refresh your mind and focus on your environment. Switching devices off an hour before bedtime and reading a book is very beneficial and aids in a good night's sleep.

Even trying one of these tips can boost your self-care routine which is perfect for the autumn-winter transition.

How do you feel about incorporating some or all of these into your routine? Let me know in the comments.
